A strong public education system is the foundation of our democracy. High-quality public schools provide a ladder of opportunity for all children in California and should be a constitutional right. Yet, public schools, politicians, and bureaucrats have persisted in adopting and defending policies that restrict the availability of high-quality public education and do not put the children first.
Students Matter is a founding partner of Kids First, who represents a coalition of teachers, parents and community organizers. Kids First is proposing an amendment to the California Constitution via ballot initiative: the High-Quality Public Education Act (HQPE). This ballot initiative would amend the California Constitution, establishing a right to a high-quality public education for all children. It would inhibit the government from engaging in policies or statutes that would be detrimental the child’s right to a high-quality education.
